How to catch/kill a Lion SP ishtyle ...

         Now you guys must have read/spammed this joke a zillion number of times, but then once again adding a bit of flavor (chat-pata masala) to this cliched one.. SP ishtyle !!

How to Catch/Kill a Lion

Newton's Method: Let, the lion catch you. For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. Implies you caught lion.
Einstein Method: Run in the direction opposite to that of the lion. Due to higher relative velocity, the lion will also run faster and will get tired soon. Now you can trap it easily.
Software Engineer Method: Catch a cat and claim that your testing has proven that its a Lion. If anyone comes back with issues tell that you will upgrade it to Lion.
Indian Police Method: Catch any animal and interrogate it & torture it to accept that its a lion .
Rajnikanth Method : Keep warning the lion that u may come and attack anytime. The lion will live in fear and die soon in fear itself.
Manirathnam Method (director): Make sure the lion does not get sun light and put the lion in a dark room with a single candle lighted. Keep murmuring something in its ears. The lion will be highly irritated and commit suicide.
Karan Johar Method (director): Send a lioness into the forest. Our lion and lioness fall in love with each other. Send another lioness in to the forest, followed by another lion. First lion loves the first lioness and the second lion loves the 2nd lioness. ut 2nd lioness loves both lions. Now send another lioness (third) into the forest. You don't understand right... ok....read it after 15 yrs, then also u wont!
Yash Chopra method (director): Take the lion to Australia or US.. and kill it in a good scenic location.
Govinda method: Continuously dance before the lion for 5 or 6 days.
Menaka Gandhi method: Save the lion from a danger and feed him with some vegetables continuously.
George bush method: Link the lion with Osama bin laden and shoot him!


Finally .. the spice version
SP Style : Get the lion to watch a movie video and ask him to write a pre-read, then the 200 page summary, then form groups and write a detailed report and later again form another group and then write under a different topic on the same movie and then once again form a different group to present a PPT; and to make it really lively link each of these works with credits worth a dime.

p.s: The above entry was purely a sarcastic comment, the germ of which was after we were asked to watch the brilliant piece of a movie called "WallStreet" and later we have to sit throughout the night forming teams and discussing about the PPT.

"Just when you need that extra mile of energy and boost ... check out GSK's products " Shouts the headline.. and then as the camera zooms in you can see truckloads of SP's students gathered around the drinks dispenser having their fill along with Sachin Tendulkar saying .. "BOOST is the secret of OUR energy"

And then we got back to studies.....

p.s: GSK had come over to campus for their pre-placement talks and as a result we had free DRINKS(read as Horlicks & Boost). I guess next on the line should be Pizza Hut or maybe MTR... what say Placement Committee ;)

p.p.s: Did u know that Horlicks which is sold in India as a energy giving drink is actually sold in UK as a sleep-inducing drink ?!!!

FAS with Sandeep Gokhale...

        In general... any speech filled with Jargon, management fundae and illogically sounding twisted oxymorons are referred in MBA style as GAS(Garbage Analysis Systems). The word GAS can be used either as a noun or also as a verb for example ...
        "Let us all GAS together at the paper.. after all Relative grading shall definitely GAS us across."
        Somehow something which has emerged as a totally opposite subject is FAS (Financial Accounting Standards).. Oh yeah...i know you must be wondering after my previous totally diabolical stand on anything concerned with Financial subjects, what could have done me in ??
        The answer my dear friends... was Sandeep Gokhale..
        A brief introduction ...Mr.Sandeep Gokhale, Senior V.P of Vedanta Resources (known earlier as Sterlite group) prior to this was the Business Development Mgr for Jindal Steel. Currently he also takes classes to students across various insti. on subjects related to Finance; and is currently taking the subject FAS for us :)
        Here was a person who took us 4 Straight hours of class with only a 15 mins break.. on a sunday morning ... he took a abysmally low point in our day to the zeniths of F.A understandings ....
        Suddenly as if there was a magic charm I have started adoring P&L statements, Cash flows and all other financial instruments...
        The really wonderful aspect was that S.G started with the theoretical part, and then took a tangential practical example (mostly from his Work-exp) and then went to the next tangent and then so on and so forth.. ultimately forming a perfectly round shape bringing us back to the initial understanding !!
        He gave us amazing insights into Taxation, depreciation and everything connected with them..
        Did u know that the company has to file a min depreciation if in case they have to declare dividends ?
        And I really adored the practical example he gave of how the share prices of Tisco did a See-Saw, though the core competency of the group increased substantial..

        All hail S.G :)

        p.s: SPJIMR does have it's own share of experienced Full time faculty, whose CV if i have to list, would have occupied this entire page.... but it is just I haven't been exposed to their classes... and after the first experience with a thorough industry experienced faculty... raring for more

All i missed was a thursday :(

        Unlike in all other institutes, SPJIMR has this philosphy of having thursdays as the official week-end; every other day including Saturday and Sunday are considered are full working days and are usual days for guest-lectures.
        According to SP routine, we all take off on wednesday nights end up with some resturant and spending time out of the campus (more so cause the Campus MESS is closed on wednesday nights) and then use thursday to catch up on all lost sleep during the week; in most cases we end up just snoozing our alarm clocks throughout the entire thursday DAY.
        And so, i decided to give my home-town a visit due to personal reasons ruminating on the fact that thursdays would after all be chill-out day.

        But only after i arrived here back into campus on Friday morning i realized what i missed :-
        1) CEO talk by Mr. Baru Rao, Capgemini India
        2) Deadline for submitting one of my papers
        3) Group-assignment work
        4) 3 pre-reads for the next day

        Well... I must write this down in my DIARY "THURSDAYS are still not a HOLIDAY"

P.G Labs....... Re-inventing yourself !!!

       Personal Growth LABS, as christened in SPJIMR.... these are a culmination of theory and practical exposure to Team dynamics, self realization and conflict resolvability.
       After the entire onslaught of our foundation exams, it was a more than welcome break to head off as an entire group towards lonavala on a 4 day team-building exercise, involving Ice-breaker events, trekking, assault course, event management and a helluva lot more.
       Apart from these various physical activities, what really made sense to me was when we discussed about various OB related theories and how exactly we had applied these without our own intrinsic knowledge, few of the idealogies were simply mind-blowing....
       And of course, as the Adage goes... "Better experienced than informed" i personally feel that P.G labs is one of the finest experiences of my life-time which cannot be expressed in mere mortalish words.
       We went as 164 distinct indivuals but returns back as a single entity... and i guess, it really reflects on the success of the P.G Labs


       The Theory behind P.G labs which is being formulated can be expressed as succintly in the following diagram :

End of foundation ... beginning of ??

        I still quite vividly remember the day, 21st of June and in midst of a team meeting at Hewlett Packard i got a call with my excited sister on the other end... yelling "You got your foundation books..... there are three of them, each with the width of Harry potter's Goblet of fire and length full-scape"

        Strange as that may sound... that was the ultimate truth.... these were monstrosities in the name of management books and we had to finish reading them for the pre-foundation tests (failing these means rolling back on the baggage and the fees)

        Of course.. the above parah.. was hardly anything remotely associated with reality.

        Pre-foundation exams were cleared by all of us holding on to a minuscule manuscript called the "DOCKET" which was sent along with these books summarizing only key concepts required (more so like the "made easy series" in engineering)

        And then came the Foundation...
        These goliaths in the name of books were but sugar-candy as we started reading them... fluffy and sweet.

        The course content for our Foundation can be outlined as follows :-
        a)Financial Accounting (Author:Stice & Stice)
        b)Micro Economics (Author: Manikw)
        c)Quant. mgmt (Author: Ken black)
        d)Managerial Communication
        e)Intro to Case methodology
        f)What management is ? (book review of the same : Joan Magretta,Nan Stone )

        Being engineers, we did what we do best... "LAST MIN studying" and ironically, i was suddenly enamored by the beauty of each of these books and currently after our foundation exams have finished I have taken up re-reading of these for beyond academic purpose (how un-engineer can i get ;) ??)

        Talking about being un-engineerish, we finished all our assignments on our own (without Paulo Alto's help... in case u are wondering this phrase of mine... paulo alto is the research center for XEROX), and group-works were finished within the specified time-frame.

        Overall memories of the foundation course flood me as a premier training grounds for the un-initiated of us into the world of Ledgers & accounts, Marginal utility & oligopoly, sample case study initiatives and better communication (oral & written)

        Of we go unto P.G LABS .... a 4 day outing after slogging continuously the past entire week for the foundation exams; unwinding SP STYLE

And you have been "AD-MAPPED"...

ADMAP - STRIVING FOR EXCELLENCE
Assessment & Development of Managerial & Administrative Potential,or as the Junta at SP refer it with it's cute & sweet abb. "ADMAP"; is not just a course but rather the way of life in SPJAIN....

        ADMAP is a home-grown program of SPJIMR that has continuously evolved to its present form over the last several years. Fostered under the guidance of our HON. DEAN Dr. Shrikant, M. L. (one of my personal inspirations as i joined SP), this program is more like having a practical approach towards administration by involving the students into the working architecture of SPJAIN as such; students shall be assigned to various committees (either randomly or based on their preferences) and then together with the faculty in-charge they shall forge across an entire year trying to innovate and implement their ideologies.

         Agreed, that the concept is not novel.. but what really caught my eyes were the range of committees that have been created, the diversity not-withstanding the work profile and opportunities that each offer is truly bombastic (if i am permitted to use such a word)
         We have committees ranging from PRCom(public relationship) to Infra COM(Infrastructure), each of the specs (i.e finance, marketing, IM) have their own individual spec. SBUs(Strategic Business Units).

         Numerically speaking this year, we have around 23 core-committees along with a few more special interest groups such as LIFE (environment forum), Media, et all which are not mandatory to join.

         The activities that each and every committee has to be involved during the entire academic year are not exactly pre-defined and usually depends on the energy levels of each committee, but nevertheless both the scope and the budget being alloted for each of the committee is not bound.
         Usually every Com. would have it's own specific Event, e.x: each of the SBUs have their own flagship event, in the case of Info. Mgmt. they have Bhavitva, which involves a industry panel discussion and various events which are out to resolve the current issues plaguing the IT field so on and so forth.

         Now it would definitely be inappropriate if i stop with the workings of ADMAP with only the practical level discussions... behind ADMAP has evolved a really massive theory, bordering closely on OB(Organizational behaviour) & BP (Business Practices) and further on we also have nine modalities (modules) to be finished by the end of our first year in ADMAP;it would be worthwhile to note that the best of the brains of the institute are working behind making this course-work really path-breaking... and believe me... it really shows.

        p.s: I got into Entre COM (Entrepreneurship Committee), which was my second choice after CIG (Consultancy Interest Group) ... lets see as the flagship unfolds.

Podcasting @ the speed of night

         Right now, as many SPites would be knowing that quizzes are seldom surprise.. the fact that they occur at the drop of the hat robs them of that robin-hood surprise.
         Hence the solution, usually involves working the mid-night LAPTOP, frequent trips to the night-canteen and frenzied group studies within the hostel; but there is one aspect that has really made our lives easier.. MUSIC
         And what better than MUSIC .... u got it right "LOUD MUSIC"
         connect a speaker system to ur lappie and it just sings away to glory; but here lies a logistical issue.... the constant mis-match between the system which has all the eclectic songs and the one which is connected to the speakers....
         After sufficient case-study analysis was performed upon this postmortem issue, the seniors (once again thank god for them) found a solution SP ishstyle ....

PODCAST: A podcast is a specific type of webcast which, like 'radio', can mean either the content itself or the method by which it is syndicated; the latter is also termed podcasting.

         Considering that the LAN available is awesome enough to play counter-strike, transfer entire Hard-disks and still have some more speed to send across those GOD(Google oriented Development) searches... it just worked as perfect as a 'pie in a tie'
         Further, IPMsg;the effective tool to broad-cast the playlist guides available, viola you have the miniature version of customized WorldSPACE.

         Podcasting across seniors has evolved to such an extent, that we do have PJ (yes; that is my own copyrighted abbreviation- Podcast Jockeys) wars ....
         looks like the PARTY is just getting started.

When the Rain GOD gets Hysterical

It was around 4th Standard and I shall remember this throughout my entire life, one of the first time that my belief in god was strengthened to the core. I had not finished my home-work and after constant reprimanding I was sure that the teacher would rather take my pants down in class this time, and boy did i pray to god with all my might....
LO Behold there was RAIN... and then i was saved from the blasphemous humiliation.

This was one of the first few weeks @ SP, and this brought back all those old-gold memories.. it rained and with the mumbai might, more so reminded me of the few scenes of Forest Gump, while during his millitary moments in vietnam he says, that suddenly it started raining and it just kept on raining......

And in case you are still wondering.... no, there was no cancellation of classes unfortunately this time of the year ;)

Fusion Ensemble : A pleasant change

        It indeed had been quite some time(read 2 weeks), since there has been any other activity in campus apart from the regular birthday bashes and series of "surprise" quizzes were promulgated
        Hence, the announcement of a Music fete with a band called "Fusion Ensemble" as a part of Nimitt's activities (The Fest by the MIT folk). But foremost, I had to clear the mismatch between them and the pakistani band "Fuzon" across most of my colleagues.
        We however did have Sonu Nigam and Raju Srivastav(The comedian) come over the SPJIMR Audi for some private party (unfortunately we were not allowed access) earlier, and this had raised the hopes of everyone about the entry of the Pak band too .... ;)
        With much of apprehension, but a requisition of break i entered the Audi... but Boy oh boy, you can sure bet that I would have much to thank to my decision for a break...
        This band, believe me or not makes you wanna HEAD-BANG by playing a FLUTE.

Welcome To SPJIMR.. The Journey Begins !!!

Hello Everyone,

There was a time when you were put through a trial. But that phase has gone. You are now the newest members of SPJIMR family. And this is the time for expectations, both on your and our side. A few days more would get you at the doorstep of an institution that would become an integral part of your lives. That would take you on a journey of change and learning. A very hearty welcome to each one of you from Participants' Executive Council ( PEC).

Mark Twain said "A thing long expected takes the form of the unexpected when at last it comes." Well don't put a check on your expectations – they have their own fun. But do let us give you a glimpse of how life at SPJIMR would be.

Studies and Academics are an integral part of the life at SPJIMR and we do hope that you all are studying your pre-foundation material sincerely. Academics are no doubt very very important but definitely not sufficient. There are numerous opportunities to show your talents. If you are a singer or dancer, you are already a star! Be prepared as you would be in high demand for various cultural events. And if you happen to be the badminton champion of the old college days then its time to trouble those muscles
again or you can show your sport skills on the basketball court. Starting from cricket to table tennis to trekking- the list is endless. At SP we firmly believe in maintaining the right proportions of academics and extra curricular activities during the two year PGDM program.

A typical day in SPJIMR has about three classes in the morning and two in the afternoon after which there are group work assignments to keep you engaged till dinner. There is however no fixed format for this. Usually there is a CEO lecture in every 1-2 weeks for which you are expected to be dressed formally. Even otherwise there are various courses in which practicing experts from industry form part of the faculty and hence it makes sense to have a decent collection of formals in your packing list.

Sundays are working and Thursday is the official weekly off but that does not assure that you can completely relax and go to a relative's place as on most occasions there would be assignments to be submitted on Friday mornings or a scheduled/ unscheduled (read surprise) test waiting for you. Thursdays are also mostly utilized to do entire week's pending laundry. There are washing machines available in the hostels. However, if you are not the money saving type then the clothes can always be given to a washer man/woman who if you so wish would also iron them. But what Thursdays do mean is that you can go for a nice outing on Wednesday evenings. Since there is no mess food available there is little option available anyways.

Food available inside SPJIMR campus is strictly vegetarian. There is a mess where breakfast, lunch and dinner are provided. Also there is a canteen inside the institute, which offers tea, coffee, cold drinks and various snacks. Just outside the campus there is a restaurant named Vrindavan, where good vegetarian food is available at reasonable rates.

There is also the Bhavan's Canteen which can be tried out for lunch or evening snacks.For the more indulgent there are options that extend beyond the campus.
There are numerous food joints in Andheri and Bandra. Pop Tates is the ideal place to visit if you feel like having good continental food. Mocha (a café home), Urban Tadka, MacDonald's and Pizza Hut are few others in an exhaustive list of food joints where one can easily reach in less than 10 minutes in an auto rickshaw.

Life is very hectic at SPJIMR as we have tests, pre class readings, presentations, surprise quizzes, numerous assignments to be submitted round the clock. However we still love to look beyond the surface. Movies, beach outings, shopping sprees, long chatting sessions and catching up on those lost sleep hours is what joy in suffering is all about! There are 3 multiplexes, Fame Adlabs, PVR Juhu & Fun Republic near the campus; they are one of the favorite hanging spots of students. Also there is a special discount of 10% at these multiplexes on showing SPJIMR I-Cards.Evenings can also be spent at Juhu and Versova beaches that are not too far way.

As far as shopping is concerned, the items of daily use can be obtained from Apna Bazaar, a supermarket situated behind the boy's hostels. For buying shirts, jeans, shoes etc., one can go to Shoppers' Stop or visit the Lokhandwala market.

It will take sometime for the non Mumbai people to acclimatize to the weather here as it is quite unfriendly. Weather tends to be hot and humid so bringing along light T-shirts and cotton pants is recommendable. Again once it starts raining in Mumbai, it usually continues for a real long time, so it is important that you have an umbrella/raincoat with you among other items. Do not forget to toss in a pair of old shoes that would come in handy for going out in the rainy season apart from your formal shoes which
would be required for all formal occasions.

Life in a B School tends to be stressful and one needs a lot of stamina to face it. Hence staying fit achieves prime importance and to make things easier we have Andheri sports complex at less than 5 minutes walk from the campus. The sports complex has got a lot to offer ranging from badminton, squash, lawn-tennis to the good old gym.

We don't know whether you will become a good marketing or finance manager in SPJIMR but what you would definitely learn to manage is your room; it
is nothing less than an art at SP. Rooms here are 2-seaters or 3-seaters. A section of almirah is provided for keeping clothes and books (ever heard
of space management?). However, there are no hangers for clothes provided. A standard single bed mattress is provided to every student along with a
pillow.

Please remember that hostel registrations would begin on 18th June. Rooms would be allocated only during office hours, i.e. 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. As mentioned in our previous mail, if your arrival time is different, let us know in advance so that prior arrangements can be made. A list indicating your accommodation will be displayed on the notice board in the main institute building. Please go through the list to find out your room and ask the security personnel for directions to reach your hostel.

In addition to the above-mentioned there are various small things that you would require like bed sheets, pillow covers, buckets, mugs, mosquito repellants (like
'All-Out') and most importantly a lock with keys in triplicate. Needless to say all these things could be easily bought from Apna Bazaar or Andheri Market.
ATMs of ICICI, SBI and UTI banks are very near to the campus.

Finally, the moment you step into the boundaries of the institute you would be given the title of PGP1. So pump in all the oxygen that you can find in
your lungs because from where we stand the future of you guys and gals, seems to be pretty much breathtaking!

With only 4 of the top teams to battle it out, and prizes of 30K ... it is going to be a battle well-fought out .

And Alas said the Lord...

         May 9th, 2007: it is almost like the day when Hagrid first lands up on Harry potter’s life and house, and shatters everything by announcing "you are no ordinary muggle, but a gifted-wizard".
         Finally I have got admission into a B-school; now the challenge: to shatter the peaceful ambience that I have build all around me; including a cushy job, pocket filling salary, doting girl-friend and forge apart a new avatar of myself, or as in pure marketing terminologies, “Re-inventing myself”.
         The quest for an MBA was incidentally fired when myself and my friend Aravind, took part in a Business plan competition(reason: prize was a lakh) and then somehow our amateur luck shone and we were the only engineering team among the top 8 teams presenting before esteemed industrialists such as C.K.Ranganath (CEO calvin Care), Arun Jain(CEO polaris) and the RPG chief honco for the Anna university Entreprenership cell. It was during the initial stages of our plan that we came across couple of people who had finished their MBA and settled in varied fields, the branch-manager of SBI-Chennai, an auditor, couple of senior junta whose opinion we valued. It was then that I realized that there was something different among all these people across such multitude of job-profiles….
         What really set these people apart was their thinking, how they approached any problem, trying to cast their thought-process across the entire zenith of our discussion.
         Much later, however when my dream run at the software concern was going across I had the benevolence to have close correspondence with the business head of our Storage vertical in Wipro Technologies, and then a few more amazing section manager at HP added fuel to the aspiration for doing my M.B.A
         "There are two kinds of people in this world as I believe those who get into the IIMs and those who become mere statistics (the remaining 99 percentile who just could'nt). And I did not want to be a mere statistic. "
        For almost two years I toiled hard, just to accomplish my dream… Frankly speaking, it was an obsession which practically consumed every week-end and any spare moments I had. Things were progressing as expected, every mock-cats I was always in the top 95 percentile I had a highest rank of All India 17 till my lowest of 1500. It was over-confidence which ultimately led to the doom; somehow all the boost-up and egoistic beratings squeezed into the very last time and like Karna, I lost when it matter the most. I got a mere 90 percentile overall and the split-up was none-the-less stupendifying !!!
        The first week was shattering after the results were declared, in my over-confidence I had applied only to the top four B-schools in India; IIMs, FMS, XLRI and SPJAIN.
        Luckily I scored 98 percentile in XAT and somehow managed to get a call only from SPJAIN. Here was my safety net, becoming my last and final hope.
My profile :


a) Top ranker in school, awarded National merit certificates by N.C.E.R.T for both X and XII.
b) Computer science grad with a mere 86 % in college, college representation with very little to show as extra-curriculars, and definitely no spectacular achievements in sports.
c) Industry experience : 2 yrs with WIPRO technologies and then 10 months with Hewlett-Packard. Appreciation: “Exceeding” ratings at both my work-places.
d) Avid Quizzer(rather quiz master), conducted corporate quizzes within WIPRO and across shishya school and Hindu Senior. Hobbies includes trekking, exploring places with the recent back-packing trek across entire Egypt and Dubai.

        I knew that with my preparation, all I needed was an interview call and sure I could convert it, with due diligence I prepared and voila got into SPJAIN.
        This Blog shall henceforth record the experience of an M.B.A professional, the trials and tribulations, the mistakes and discoveries; my 2 years with my extended family.
