The word "zero" came via French zéro from Venetian language zero, which (together with "cipher") came via Italian zefiro from Arabic şafira = "it was empty", şifr = "zero", "nothing", which was used to translate Sanskrit śūnya ( शून्य ), meaning void or empty.

p.s: This post only reflects my own perambulations and does not reflect the enormous efforts of my C.A friends and lecturers in trying to adapt my brain to the concepts and conventions of Balance Sheets & Income Statements, all of which due to non-conformity to any equational statistics definitely act as a unbreakable conundrum to this Engineering Brain.
